Nick Wright: The Sports Talk Star with Heart and Hustle
Hey there, friends! Let’s chat about Nick Wright – a guy who’s turned his love for sports into a full-on
career that’s got us all tuning in. If you’ve caught First Things First on Fox Sports 1 or scrolled through sports chatter on X,
you’ve probably heard his bold takes and big energy. As of 2025, Nick’s a familiar face (and voice!)
in the sports world, blending sharp insights with a personality that’s as real as it gets.
So, grab a coffee or a comfy seat, and let’s dive into what makes Nick Wright such a standout!
From Kansas City Kid to Sports Media King
Nick Wright was born on October 3, 1984, in Kansas City, Missouri – a city he’s
still crazy about (just ask him about the Chiefs!). Growing up in a sports-loving family,
he was hooked early – he even called into a Chiefs post-game radio show as a 10-year-old,
sneaking past the “no kids” rule with his dad’s help to critique the coach. That’s Nick in a nutshell –
fearless and ready to talk ball! He took that passion to Syracuse University,
where he graduated in 2007 with a degree in broadcast journalism from the S.I.
Newhouse School of Public Communications.
While there, he ran the sports talk desk at WAER-FM, sharpening the skills that’d make him a star.
After college, Nick kicked off his career at Kansas City’s KCSP 610 AM,
starting as a production assistant before hosting his own show, What’s Right with Wright?.
The local paper, The Pitch, dubbed him the “most polarizing and likely most popular host”
and named him the best sports personality in 2010. From there,
he moved to Houston to co-host In the Loop with Nick and Lopez on KILT 610 AM, dreaming of being America’s top sports talk voice – a goal he’s pretty darn close to now!
Taking Over TV with First Things First
In 2016, Nick jumped to Fox Sports, popping up on shows like The Herd with Colin Cowherd
(who’s been a mentor of sorts). His big break came in 2017 when he launched First Things First on
FS1 with Cris Carter and Jenna Wolfe – now co-hosted with Kevin Wildes and Chris Broussard.
Airing weekdays from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. ET, it’s a morning must-watch, thanks to Nick’s
knack for mixing stats with storytelling. He’s not afraid to go big – whether he’s defending LeBron
James as the GOAT (a hill he’ll die on!) or diving into hot topics like race in sports, he’s got a way of making you listen, even if you don’t agree.
He’s also got a podcast, What’s Wright? with Nick Wright, with his stepson Damonza – a fun,
family twist that shows off his softer side. Oh, and he’s dabbled in poker too, facing off against Phil Hellmuth in 2021 on
High Stakes Duel – he didn’t win, but he held his own!
Life Beyond the Mic
Nick’s personal life is just as rich as his career. He’s been married to Danielle Wright since
April 14, 2013 – a stylist and entrepreneur who’s his rock.
They met in 2007 when Nick was in a rough spot, and Danielle brought her two kids,
Damonza and Diorra, into his life. He adopted them after the wedding, and in October 2013,
they welcomed their daughter, Deanna. Nick’s open about how his family saved him –
he gets teary every Father’s Day talking about it! They live in New York now,
and you can catch him gushing about his kids or his Chiefs on X, where he’s got over 500,000 followers.
His roots run deep too – his dad, Louie, was a firefighter and union leader,
and his mom, Charlene, was an attorney.
That mix of grit and smarts? Definitely in Nick’s DNA.
Why We Can’t Get Enough
At 40, with a net worth around $1-2 million, Nick Wright’s a force. He’s loud,
he’s opinionated (Chiefs fans still mourn with him after tough losses!), and he’s
not shy about social issues –
his takes on Colin Kaepernick’s protests earned raves from Vox.
Sure, he’s got haters
(some call him “LeBron’s cheerleader”), but that’s just Nick being Nick –
unapologetic and all in. Fans on X love his
“convincing arguments” and “endearing arrogance,”
as one put it, and his chemistry with his
First Things First crew keeps the show fresh.
Whether he’s breaking down the NBA playoffs,
hyping Patrick Mahomes,
or just being a dad, Nick’s
got that spark that pulls you in.
He’s not just a sportscaster –
he’s a guy who loves the game and isn’t afraid to show it.
