Why could the scandal that fueled Trump’s endorsement scandal in North Carolina hurt the former president?
Introduction: Why could
Donald Trump’s life is in danger
because of his actions in North Carolina.
A presidential election in
critical ups and downs amid
already heated debates was
upended Thursday by CNN’s
stunning investigation into a
porn scandal involving Republican
gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson.
Governor General Robinson, whose politics and personality
Governor General Robinson, whose politics and personality are extreme even by the standards of Trump’s own MAGA movement, has called himself a “black Nazi.” CNN’s KFile reports that the porn site’s forum expressed support for the reinstatement of slavery more than a decade ago. Many of the comments are obscene and gratuitously sexual.
Robinson denied making the comments before his political career. But his attitude toward Trump, calling him a “Martin Luther King on steroids” and putting him on stage at a recent rally, has upended the race for the White House.
Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign was quick to draw attention to the national fallout from the scandal, attempting to equate Trump with Robinson. He argued that the former president was misogynistic, immoral, extremist and unfit for office. For example, the campaign published photos of them together on social media, with Trump’s signature emoticon.
The question of whether Mr. Robinson’s political disaster will significantly hurt Mr. Trump’s chances in one of the most competitive and important battleground states is complicated.
Those who voted for Trump are extremely loyal to the candidate. So denigrating Robinson doesn’t mean they won’t vote for the former president. And North Carolina was viewed by Democrats as certain to win several times in recent elections, but remained stubbornly in the red. However, in today’s tight race, even a slight decline in Republican turnout could have a significant impact.
And if North Carolina were to lose one of the blue wall states of Pennsylvania, Wisconsin or Michigan, the impact would be huge, as it could provide an alternative path to the White House for Harris.
