Vinesh Phogat announces retirement: Indian wrestling legend’s career highlights
Introduction: Vinesh Phogat, visibly upset at being excluded from the gold medal race at the 2024 Paris Olympics,
announced on Thursday that he has retired from wrestling.

Considered one of the greatest wrestlers
in the history of Indian wrestling, Vinesh also
comes from a serious wrestling family.
He is a three-time Olympian and has won three
gold medals at the Commonwealth Games,
two bronze medals at the World Championshipsand one gold medal at the Asian Games. He also won the Asian Championship in 2021.
Following in the footsteps of her cousins Jeeta Phogat and Babita Kumari, she belongs to a famous wrestling family and was introduced to the sport at a young age by her uncle Mahavir Singh Phogat.
A prodigy and a great start to adulthood
After a stellar junior career, Vinesh won his first major international title at the CWG in 2014, winning gold in the 48kg category. He won the Olympic qualification in Istanbul and secured his place in Rio 2016. But her dream of a medal was shattered in Rio when she sprained her right knee midway through the quarterfinals.

But he lost the next match and was eliminated. Vinesh later revealed that he was not in good mental and physical shape for Tokyo 2020 and subsequently underwent surgery on his elbow.
She returned in 2022 and won bronze at the C World Championships in Belgrade and gold at CWG Birmingham. He was also named India’s Sportsman of the Year following protests against former WFI president and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who was accused of sexual harassment by several female wrestlers.
