West Indies won their third consecutive T20I
series against South Africa, defending by 179 runs at
the Brian Lara Cricket Academy where they nullified
a well-judged comeback. South Africa scored
129 in the 14th over for the loss of 3 wickets.
Ahel Hossain and Qudkesh Moti made major strides
with the dismissals of Tristan Stubbs and Donovan Ferreira,
but it was up to Romario Shepherd and Shamar Joseph
to finish the job. Shepherd took 3 wickets for 15 runs and
József 3 wickets for 31 runs in his four overs.
Together they ruined South Africa’s chances of an equaliser.
but Lisa Hendricks caught the ball midway through
the fourth over and hit the first boundary of South Africa’s reply.
The last ball of Hussain’s opening was not short,
And it was like a switch had been flipped.
Hendricks hit a long pass from Matthew Ford,
played a complete pass through coverage and then looked
like he was just trying to block on the back foot,
but his best result came against Chase, where he scored
22 runs in five balls, including six consecutive balls on either side of the wicket,
Hoshin keeps South Africa on the brink
Hussain conceded 17 runs in the first two overs
of the innings and was reversed in the fourteenth over.
South Africa had both Tristan Stubbs and Rossy van
der Dusen in the field and scored quickly,
scoring 13 runs and scoring 125 for 3. Hossein attacked
Stubbs and made the crucial breakthrough.
Stubbs tried to lift a slow ball that flew towards
long-off but couldn’t get enough of it and was
caught by substitute Fabian Allen. Ferreira also
fell off the pace and was overpowered by Moti
in the next over, but it was Hussain’s final over that ended
South Africa’s hopes. Van der Dusen tried to hit it in the middle,
but the ball only touched the inside half of the bat and was
intercepted by Joseph. South Africa were 138 in 6 overs
after 16 overs needed 42 runs in 24 balls. Joseph and
Shepherd made it out of South Africa’s reach and
cleared the tail before Matthew Ford ended the game.
