Melissa Ellen Gilbert was born on May 8, 1964, in Los Angeles, California, adopted at just
one day old by actor Paul Gilbert and actress-dancer Barbara Crane. Showbiz was in her blood –
her grandpa created The Honeymooners, and her parents were Hollywood pros. By age two,
she was modeling baby clothes on TV, and at nine, she beat out 500 kids to land Little
House on the Prairie (1974-1983). Playing Laura, she became a household name, starring in
191 episodes alongside Michael Landon, her on-screen dad and real-life mentor. She even
got a Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 1985 – the youngest ever at the time!

Her early years weren’t all sunshine, though. She lost her dad at 11
