Linkin Park releases new music 7 years after Chester Pennington’s death
Introduction: Linkin Park
NEW YORK (AP) — Linkin Park is back
with a new lineup, releasing its first
new song since the death of lead
singer Chester Bennington in 2017.
On Thursday, the band launched a live
stream with new vocalist Emily
Armstrong and drummer Colin Britten,
who will join returning members Mike
Shinoda, Brad Delson, Phoenix and Joe
Hahn in Linkin Park’s new lineup. Shinoda
and Armstrong share voice duties.
The new band released their new
single entitled “Empty Car” via the
stream. Armstrong’s playing style easily
follows the band’s tradition. His throat
singing reminds me of Bennington without
trying to imitate him. This was quickly
proven with the second track of the
set, “Somewhere I Belong.”
“This is a very special day for us,”
“This is a very special day for us,” Shinoda said at the introduction. “This afternoon, each of you will play the role of Chester Bennington,” Shinoda told the crowd.
The new group, Linkin Park, also announced their new album, From Zero. It will be released on November 15.
The rock-rap group was one of the most commercially successful groups of the 2000s, bolstered by Bennington’s vocals. He committed suicide at the age of 41, shortly after the release of the band’s final album, One More Light. Since then, Linkin Park has released several reissues, including Hybrid Theory 20th Anniversary Edition, Meteora, and this year’s Papercuts.
Shinoda said in a statement: “Before Linkin Park, our first band was called Zero. The title of this album references both those humble beginnings and the journey we are currently on.”
Armstrong is a member of the alternative rock band Dead Sarah and Britten is a songwriter and producer who has worked with Papa Roach, One Oak Rock, All Time Low and others. A representative for the band told The Associated Press that he replaces original drummer Rob Bourdon, who “has decided to leave the band.”
