Introduction: LeBron and Brony
LOS ANGELES — When LeBron James made history
two seasons ago by passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the
NBA’s all-time leading scorer, his oldest son, Brony
James, was sitting on the sidelines near the baseline.
On Tuesday night, during the Los Angeles Lakers’ season
opener against the Minnesota Timberwolves, LeBron
and Brony made history by taking the court together.
When they checked in together at four in the second
quarter, they became the first father-son duo in
NBA history to play together. LeBron started and
played 13 minutes before returning to
face Brony in a historic moment.
As the pair rose from the bench and walked to the
scorer’s table, the Crypto.com Arena crowd erupted
in cheers as LeBron and Brony stopped their
warm-ups to officially enter the court.
The Lakers were down 7-2 on the first shift when
Bruney missed an open three-pointer on the wing
and then had a tipping attempt on the right wing
blocked by Rudy Gobert after grabbing an offensive rebound.
Bruney, who was selected by Los Angeles
with the 55th pick of the second round in
June, struggled in the preseason, averaging 4.2
points on 29.7 percent from the field. However,
he had a solid performance, scoring 17 points on
7 of 17 shooting, 4 rebounds and 3 steals.
Before the Wolves’ game,
Redick said he was “excited” to be part of a “historic” opportunity with LeBron and Bruin starting the season on the same team. Redick said he consulted with father and son to get ideas about how they would like to play their first game together.
“We’ve had some conversations about that,” Redick said. “I think everyone agrees. We want it to make sense and, of course, happen as the game progresses.” Another father-son duo made history when they stood on the same podium where Brony broke his father Abdul-Jabbar’s record.
Ken Griffey Jr. and Ken Griffey Sr., the first father-son duo to play together in the MLB, made a case for it. “It’s a great moment in sports history to know that with me and Brony on the same team, these guys are going to be here tonight,” LeBron said after the morning shootaround in Los Angeles.
LeBron and Brony took a short break from pregame warmups to greet the Griffiths and pose on the court.
On Tuesday, the father-son phenomenon will appear for the fourth time in professional sports.
Along with Griffis, James was joined by hockey star Gordie Howe, who played with his two sons, Mark and Marty, for the Hartford Whalers in 1980, the family’s first NHL feat. Tim Raines and Tim Raines Jr. pitched together for the Baltimore Orioles on October 4, 2001.
Griffis played two seasons together with the Seattle Mariners in 1990 and 1991, memorably hitting back-to-back home runs on September 14, 1990.
