America’s largest labor union refuses to endorse Harris or Trump

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters,
one of America’s most influential unions,
has refused to support the President
of the United States for the first time since 1996.
The union, which has about 1.3 million
members in the United States and
Canada, said it has received “little
engagement on key Teamsters issues” from
Democratic nominee Kamala Harris
and Republican nominee Donald Trump.
While a poll of members of the public
found “no clear support” for either
candidate, two recent polls suggest
support was biased towards Mr Trump.
The move is a major blow to the Harris
campaign’s efforts to turn out working-class
voters with less than 50 days until Election Day.

Shortly after the announcement, some regional Teamster councils representing more than half a million members in Michigan, Wisconsin, Nevada and California said they would support Harris.
In a statement from his campaign, Harris said he had the support of “the vast majority of organized labor” and noted that many of the Teamsters locals supported his candidacy.
“When Donald Trump said he wanted to fire striking workers, Vice President Harris was actually calling for a strike and has been a strong supporter of unions throughout his career,” campaign spokeswoman Lauren Hitt said.

Shortly after the announcement, some of the Teamsters regional councils, representing more than 500,000 members in Michigan, Wisconsin, Nevada and California, announced their support for Harris.
